A healthy lifestyle will ensure that the liver remains in working order, say doctors

With World Liver Day slated to be observed on April 19,experts around the world are calling for better liver awareness and care. Doctors say that there is need for people to spend some time understanding that this is a crucial organ that helps the body in the detoxification process. Chronic liver failure can be caused by lifestyle-related disorders such as diabetes or hypertension, autoimmune disorders and hepatitis B/C and D. Current lifestyles, trendy and exciting as they may be,are, however, causing a great deal of damage to the liver, say several doctors in the city. According to Dr Rangesh Paramesh,Head of the Himalaya drug company, the liver performs multiple tasks in the body and therefore it is important to ensure that it remains in working order.

Here are seven steps to ensuring that your liver stays healthy

– Healthy diet: A diet rich with magnesium, iron, and carbohydrates will keep the liver healthy and help in detoxifying the body. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is also essential.

– Avoid alcohol: Consuming large amounts of alcohol can lead to three serious conditions—alcoholic hepatitis, fatty liver and alcoholic cirrhosis. Keep your alcohol intake to a bare minimum or avoid alcohol altogether.

– Avoid drugs: Recreational drugs severely damage liver cells. Some prescription drugs can also be hepatotoxic,so do not exceed the recommended dosage of medication, unless advised by a doctor.

– Organic foods: Organic fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants that protect the liver as well as help in its cleansing processes. Try to include organic foods in your diet.

– Avoid environmental pollutants: Toxic fumes from paint thinners, bug sprays and other aerosols can enter the body through tiny blood vessels in your lungs and be carried to your liver, which can cause injury to the organ. Wear a protective mask when using these products.
