Make-up artist Vinod Sarode, who has worked with actors in the Marathi film industry, shares his experiences and creative process

If the technique is correct,make-up can make anyone look good,” says Vinod Sarode, the make-up artist for Amruta Khanvilkar in the Marathi film Arjun. Sarode’s expertise has also been used for several city fashion shows,May Queens and so on. The artist has worked with beauties of the Marathi film industry like Vibhavari Deshpande,Mukta Bharve,Riya Babat,Tanisha Mukherjee and Sai Tamalkar. “Working with celebrities isn’t difficult as they trust me with my work. Thankfully,my work has always been appreciated,” he smiles.

Sarode lost his family when he was just a child and he grew up through challenging circumstances. “I was always very fascinated with colours and would keep trying different colour combinations. My drawing and painting skills are not all that fantastic,so I started experimenting with make-up,” he reveals. He set up his make-up academy called Rangtarang in 2007 at Appa Balwant Chowk. The Academy has now been registered and certifies its own courses in personal make-up,creative make-up,skin care, spa treatments and more. “I try new colour combinations of make-up on my wife,Ashwini. She happily volunteers for my experiments. She is a huge support for me,” he says. “I have just registered myself for the make-up artists’ union and I am a member of the Natya Parishad and Marathi Chitrapat Mandal. Big parlours and beauty shops invite me to participate in seminars and conduct workshops in Mumbai,Pune,Satara,Kolhapur,Nashik and other parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat,” says Sarode who wishes to work with Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone as “they are very versatile and can carry make-up very well.”

“The most important and difficult part is eye make-up. It can completely transform the look of a person. You need to master the art of colour combinations and also learn the correct technique of blending colours to match or sometimes contrast your skin tone,” he explains. He recently published an illustrative book on eye make-up called Wonderstrokes . His plan is to release a book every alternate year to complete his series of five editions on eye make-up. “Natural colours like silver,off-white,bronze and golden are in vogue this monsoon. You need to start from the inner crease of the eye and spread the eye shadow to the end of the eye brow and blend it in. Water-proof kajal and mascara are also handy products during the rains,” he says.

Planning a trip to the UK International School of Hair and Make up,Sarode says,“I want to go there to learn about silicon and special effects make-up that is generally used in science fiction cinema. I want to update myself on other future trends too that will be used in cinema. I also want to show them the nuances of Indian make-up.”
