A teenager died drowned in a swimming pool in Bibwewadi on Friday morning.

Mukund Sunik Jamkhedkar,14,was an only child. He lived at Durga Building at Mahalaxmi Nagar in Bibwewadi and had cleared his Class VIII exam from Sinhagad Springdale School.

Mukund could swim but had not done so for some time, the police said. On Friday,he had gone with some friends to Shrirang Swimming Pool in Ayodhya Cooperative Housing Society in Maharshinagar. Around 30 to 40 people were swimming in the pool when Mukund started to drown. His friends alerted lifeguards, who pulled the boy out and took him to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The pool is between three and eight feet deep. Its administrator and lifeguard Hrushikesh Tatuskar said,“There has been no negligence on part of the pool authorities. Whenever someone comes to our pool,we always check whether he or she knows how to swim before admitting him or her. Mukul was not a learner. Around 10 am the lifeguards pulled him out as he was drowning. He was taken immediately to a nearby hospital where he died.”

The swimming pool is run by a builder who constructed the society in 1996,members of Ayodhya Society said. They said the builder had promised to hand over the swimming pool to the society but has not yet done so.
