The Pune city police booked the owner and staff of a pet clinic in the Kalyani Nagar area on Wednesday for allegedly causing the death of a pet dog belonging to an information technology professional.

The IT professional, a 22-year-old woman who lives with her friend in a posh apartment in the Wadgaonsheri area of Pune city, had a nine-month-old pet dog named Dash.

According to the FIR registered on her complaint filed at the Yerwada police station, the woman and her friend took the dog to the pet clinic around 1 pm on September 28 to give it a bath. They asked a pet clinic staffer to take essential precautions as the dog had the habit of licking soap water, instructing them to put an e-collar on the animal so that it would not lick soap water. They also asked the staffer to use a bigger rope instead of a choke chain while washing the dog.

However, the dog was washed at the clinic with a “low-quality” shampoo, and the staffer put a small e-collar, which is usually used for cats, allegedly allowing the pet to lick the shampoo. The complaint further said that a tight chain was put around the dog’s neck. The dog’s health declined and it started foaming at the mouth. At around 4 pm, the dog was pronounced dead at the clinic.

The dog’s body was taken to a veterinary hospital in Aundh before being cremated, according to the FIR.

The woman visited the pet clinic again, seeking CCTV footage from the day when her dog died there, but did not get any footage. The woman then filed a police complaint of cruelty and negligence against the pet clinic’s owner, shift in-charge, and staffer.

The police booked the accused people under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 324 (mischief) and 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) and sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. They said the investigation was underway in the case.
