Tales of a Sunday bazaar
An indoor market is a relief for many a shopoholic, especially in this unusual Pune heat, but when the market is accomapnied by food, drinks and a party,it really is a cause to celebrate. Those who visited Terttulia,Koregaon Park on Sunday,May 30 can vouch for this,as the popular cafe turned into a makeshift flea market. Imrun Shah, owner of Terttulia said,“We wanted to experiment,do something new on a Sunday. It was a great mix – we had good food, great music, something for both men and women, foot massages and so on. Some people set up stall in the open sections of the lounge. We even had a coffee bar” The result was the Sunday Flea Market Carnival. Some of the ‘stalls’ set up included fashion designer Uzma Poonawlla’s line of clothes,Ritu Malhotra with her stall of invitation cards and Indian wear,Rutuja Bavarkar of Iris displaying shoes and accessories,Bharti Malini showcasing skin care products and a stall of men’s wear by Kalpana Bhambhani.

Musical anecdotes
A musical journey starts with struggles, till it catches tune and brings melody to our ears. Hearing living legends talking only inspires others to come up. Shruti,an organization dedicated to the promotion of melodious and old Indian film music believes this too,and will be launching Mere Pasand Ke Geet,a series of musical programmes. The first series will focus on cartoonist Mangesh Tendulkar’s life. “We intend to make this a bi-monthly feature,” said noted music arranger Kersi Lord. The programme will be held on June 6 at the Tilak Smarak Mandir at 9.30pm.

Remembering the master
German composer Robert Schumann is considered to be one of the most important Romantic composers in the 19th century. Highly inspired by artists like Beethoven and Mozart,he wrote music extensively for the piano, despite a hand injury that effectively prevented him from realizing his dreams of becoming a virtuoso pianist. It is in celebration of his 200th birth anniversary that the Poona Music Society,in association with Furtados is organising a Robert Schumann programme, with Paul Stewart on piano,Zarin Ghadialy-Hodiwala on contralto and the Chamber Singers, conducted by Veronica Krishnayya. The concert will take place on June 11 at the Mazda Hall,Dastur Primary School,Camp at 7pm.

A trip down memory lane
Called the language of poetry,Urdu is one of the most expressive and discriptive languages in the world, especially when it is used in the form of the ghazal. Though it started off as a poetic recitation, the ghazal today has evolved into an almost exclusively Urdu song. Ghazal Ke Safar – A Musical Journey will trace the evolution of the ghazal by performing them with compositions of poets like Mir Taqi Mir,Akbar Allahabadi and Mirza Ghalib sung by Dattaprasad Ranade and Savani Ravindra. The show will also showcase recorded versions of the compositions sung by ghazal maestros like Mehdi Hassan,Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh. The two-hour long programme will take place at the IMCC Auditorium, Kothrud,on June 6,6 pm onwards.
