Leaving ways
“The story of Leaving Home is more about the back-scene struggles and triumphs the band faced before becoming what they are right now. This subject was to be put forth to audience so that they relate to every song,” said Jaideep Verma director of the movie Leaving Home that captures the enigmatic journey undertook by four men from Delhi to understand their passion for music .
The movie talks about the initial days of the formation of the band Indian Ocean, the trials and tribulations faced by them and their eventual tryst with success. The three-hour long movie showcases the coming together of the four band members from varied lifestyles, giving up their comfort zones ,struggling to find a foothold for themselves and finally achieving what they had set out to get.
The movie speaks about their initial albums to their foray into films and finally about the different genres of music, the different forms and types of contemporary Indian music which continues to inspire them.
Speaking about it Rahul Ram of Indian Ocean, says,”For us it was about just playing music, and not bothering about the outcome. It was more about seeing whether we liked what we made. Thankfully, what we liked was also appreciated by audiences as well. But all this has come only after a lot of rejection and failure. So when a film is made encompassing the entire twenty years of ones music making it feels nice because one finally feels that this was how it was meant to be.”

Noble notes
They immersed themselves in the sea of music in order to get relief from depression, stress and sorrows that every Kashmiri faced. That is how the Kashmiri band Immersion that performed yesterday at Shaniwarwada in the Kashmir festival was formed. The first Kashmiri multi religious pop band was in the city to spread the message of harmony and through it’s notes the band created the atmosphere of benediction amidst the crowd of over 200 people. The band belted out sufi numbers interspersed with popular Bollywood numbers.
The band members also shared their experiences and the challenges faced in being the only pop band of the valley.
It is very difficult to survive challenges especially for a musical band in Kashmir. We have aced many challenges since our inception. The unfortunate thing is that even our families don’t support this because according to them it is not a good choice for profession in Kashmir and secondly the risk factor involved with it is great. So the challenges we faced and are still facing are at economic, social and political levels, said Kingpaul Singh, vocalist of the band.
According to Amit Wanchoo founder of the band extremists thrive on political support and backing. The day our politicians stop mingling religion with politics, that will be the end of any form of extremism. Our music won’t be stopped until ther is some political motivation and that time we will fight it in a musical way. let us be optimistic not pessimistic. Our principle is Positive energy can make everything possible.
