The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demand of getting more staff was turned down by the state government on the pretext of no recruitment rules for the civic body. Thus, the civic administration is all set to put recruitment rules in place so that it can create additional 3,903 posts.
The PMC has a total of 16,829 posts to carry out various civic responsibilities. In its existing strength,85 are in class one category,329 in class two,4,169 in class three and 12,206 in class four. The city has witnessed drastic population growth in last few years and development at much faster pace but the strength of civic staff remained the same putting load on the existing number of civic staff. This has been due to the state government decision of not approving additional posts for civic body if there are no recuitment rules in place.
Accordingly, the PMC demand for approval of additional staff was turned down by the state government. “The PMC had been repeatedly seeking government approval for additional staff, but the government did not allow citing absence of recruitment rules. Now,the civic body has got its recruitment rules approved in the general body and we hope the state government fulfills our demand of additional staff,” said K C Karkar, deputy municipal commissioner.
He said the administration framed the recruitment rules for the first time and there have been suggestions and changes made by the elected representatives in the rules. “We will send the drafts, prepared by the administration and the one with the changes made by elected representatives,to state government for final approval. The government would decide on finalising the rules,” he added.
Kakar said the civic administration would insist the governemnt to approve the 3,903 additional posts for the civic body. As per the administration, the PMC is short of 1,397 staff at the ward offices and zonal offices. For maintaining the gardens,660 additional staff are needed.
The city engineer department is falling short of 516 staff, while the increased responsibility on solid waste management department has resulted in requirement of 448 staff.
