Seven professionals and innovators from the city were presented the annual Pune Pride Awards at Residency Club in a glittering ceremony that was a mix of humour and seriousness,with winners sharing their experiences,cracking jokes and predicting future trends.
The awards are given to honour citizens who make exemplary contribution to their fields of work or society.
The 2013 award winners ranged from ace badminton player Nandu Natekar to social worker Armene Modi,founder of Ashta Na Koi that seeks to empower women through literacy and economic and self development. Awardees shared thought provoking experiences and some of them recounted funny anecdotes.
Dr Priyadarshini Karve,who received an award for developing a kiln that converts agricultural waste to biofuel,said,I have been developing biofuel for rural people for over 20 years. Awards like this are a recognition for our work but more than that,they are an inspiration for the future.
Professor Ram Takawale who won an award spoke of new frontiers in education with the help of instant connectivity provided by internet and other media.
The ceremony was attended by actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha,actor Poonam Dhillon,Symbiosis University founder S B Mujumdar,Nana Chudasama,Chairman of Residency Club advisory board,and Residency Club chairman R K Agarwal. The ceremony was followed by a cocktail dinner.
