Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT),Pune and the College of Engineering Pune jointly conducted a seminar on water crisis on May 6. Eminent authorities and administrators took part in discussions.
The tone for the seminar was set by Suresh Khandale,Additional Director of Groundwater Survey and Development Agency (GSDA) on the availability of rain and groundwater and explained the pressing need to recharge the ground water.
Detailing the various steps being taken by the PMC to redress the citys water shortage problem in the next four years he stressed the importance of the public doing its bit by following the Supreme Courts orders and carry out rainwater harvesting in their buildings and bungalows.
District Collector Vikas Deshmukh explained the desilting works being undertaken in the whole district to ease water shortage and restore the sources of water in tanks and wells.
Support from the civilian sources came when on behalf of CREDAI,Hemant Naiknavare offered their resources to the district administration. Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh reiterated the commitment of the governmental agencies to overcome the citys water crisis before it goes out of hand. Ajit Nimbalkar ex-chief secretary,and member of PCGT advisory board stressed the need for developing our own water resources.
SC Nagpal,acting chairman of PCGT stressed the need for rapid action and emulating the example of neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad and other cities like Thane and Nagpur where the city governments have acted with alacrity and made living a pleasure for their citizens.
