With discussions and deliberations over the advancement of regional cinema,PIFF this year offered significant films, especially by young directors. A look at a few .
Vihir
A story of two boys Sameer and Nachiket (cousins who are best friends) standing on the cross roads of life,to choose between the life that leads to petty existence or of free existence. They play a game of hide and seek in a rather unusual way. Where one cousin hides in death. And the other is looking for him in the life around him. Samir’s search leads him towards the experience of oneness where he can unite with Nachiket again!
Rather than giving a definite solution it is always better to let the audiences interpret the film’s core and it’s situation through their own experiences in life, that makes Vihir an open-ending film.

Natarang
Natarang is a artist’s journey of overcoming hurdles by family, friends, society to finally realize an unthinkable dream. It is Guna’s,obsession for Tamasha who eventually sets up a theatre company. But its survival depends on inclusion of Nachya. Guna takes up the challenge of doing the role. A decision that puts his life in turmoil.
The core of Natarang is the gender politics it portrays. When the protagonist’s work changes his perception by the society changes too. The disgrace he faces is global and can be understood by any audience, this regional film therefore assembles in global cinema.

Paltadacho Munis
The Man Beyond the Bridge,a konkani film has Vinayak,a forest guard who patrols protected lands. One night,a madwoman appears at his door and Vinayak feeds her, starting a tentative friendship finally taking her into his home and bed. But Vinayak becomes an object of public suspicion. Man’s responsibility towards those in need is gracefully explored.
Konkani cinema has just started and I hope that films like this one take it to a wider audience and we prove to be a state that creates great cinema. At the same time we also need to look at films without filtering them based on a language or a state
