City-based director-producer duo’s Gabhricha Paus, after garnering praises at Rotterdam, takes over home front, sweeps Chitrapati V Shantaram Puraskar with wins in six categories

Just when Satish Manwar, director of Gabhricha Paus (The Damned Rain),got convinced of the fact that his offbeat film perhaps will be deprived of the love of regional audiences, the V Shantaram Puraskar proved him wrong. Since its first public screening at the PIFF in January this year, the film that has been globetrotting, collecting numerous accolades at different international film festivals, swept the Chitrapati V Shantaram Puraskar this Saturday.

“I honestly did not expect the film to be popular. We haven’t held many public screenings and have not even properly released the film commercially. So when we were nominated in 11 categories I could not believe it. I always thought the film, because of the serious issue it dealt with, would not appeal to the audiences. But it came as a pleasant surprise,” says Manwar.

Ravindra Natya Madir in Mumbai witnessed the success story of this bunch of first timers. Where Satish Manwar the director of the film bagged the best director for his first directorial venture, child artiste Aman Attar added the award for his debut role in his kitty. Also, the editor of the film,Suchitra Sathe got the award for excellent film editing. Gabhricha Paus eventually happens to be Sathe’s second film.

The film also is Prashant Pethe’s first independent venture as a producer. “I I was a co – producer for Valu Gabhricha Paus happens to be my first independent venture as a producer and I am ecstatic with the response,” says he.

The film focuses on farmers’ suicides in Vidarbha and uses Varadi, the popular dialect of the region as the effective medium to narrate the dilemma of helpless individuals. A n alumnus of Lalit Kala Kendra,Manwar specialised in dramatics and theatre, but enjoyed his tryst with film medium more.
