Rain again: from deficit to surplus in a day

Continuous rain in catchment areas of the four major dams has taken the water level from 3.98 TMC on Saturday evening to 4.57 TMC,15.7 per cent of the total capacity,on Sunday evening.

Continuous rain in catchment areas of the four major dams has taken the water level from 3.98 TMC on Saturday evening to 4.57 TMC,15.7 per cent of the total capacity,on Sunday evening.

Khadakwasla irrigation department officials said,“4.57 TMC is a much better storage… The catchment area is receiving good rain. If similar spells follow Pune will have sufficient storage for five to six months.” The catchment areas of Pavana dam that supplies water to the Pimpri-Chinchwad area received a significant 132mm rainfall on Sunday taking the storage to 3.74 TMC from Saturdays 3.58 TMC that is 44 per cent from 41 per cent.

The rain returned to the city after a month-long dry spell. On Sunday morning,the IMD’s recording of rainfall was 19.7 mm over the past 24 hours. With this,the city recorded 369 mm after June 1,which is 99.3 mm more than the normal by this time of the year. According to information available at the IMD website,intermittent rain is expected for the next two days. Lonavla recorded 1,500 mm from June 1.

Sunday created a perfect opportunity for an outing as trekkers and enthusiasts flocked to Lonavla,Mulshi,Khadakwasla and other destinations. “We had been waiting for the rain for over a month. Sunday was a perfect opportunity to go on a drive,” said Santosh Gore,finance professional.

The road leading to Bhushi dam had long lines of vehicles. Khadakwasla was flooded with enthusiasts,despite the recent drowning incident. “Police have been deployed to avoid any mishap,” said an official at the Police Control room,rural.
