Rag shreds

From being just an icebreaker to acquiring the hideous shape of a murder, ragging has drastically changed over the years — and for the worse.

From being just an icebreaker to acquiring the hideous shape of a murder, ragging has drastically changed over the years — and for the worse. Shaken and stirred by Aman Kachru’s suicide and another suicide attempt by a student from Andhra Pradesh, college goers in the city talk about the distorted forms ragging can acquire.

As far as ragging is concerned it should be within limits. The inhuman treatment that sells in the name of ragging is actually barbarous. Ragging is a fun filled activity. It is an icebreaker that is taking a hideous shape. In our college as juniors we just had an interactive session with our seniors, which though a fun-filled activity, never got beyond the limits of decency. Now as seniors we followed the same suit. In fact ragging is meant for the comfort of the juniors. It is to break the ice and make them feel at home.

Aman’s death has shaken us all. It is said that ragging is much more in medical and engineering colleges, which to some extent is true. But in other colleges too especially in hostels ragging is synonymous with atrocity. As a third year I too ragged my juniors but being a day scholar I only got to listen to tales of ragging in the hostels. In Pune thankfully it isn’t much, but in other parts of the country it’s getting worse.

Ragging is all about bridging the communication gap between two batches. It was started with that purpose. But today it probably widens the communication gap and leaves an indelible mark of some of the most horrible experiences in one’s life. There are laws being made to ban ragging. But ragging in its limits benefits individuals and it helps them to open up.

When we entered college last year we too were dreading this whole activity. But it turned out to be a fun filled interaction. Where we opened up not only to our seniors but our batch mates too. We in those particular sessions shed our inhibitions and discovered the new us. All thanks to our seniors who made us do crazy stuff to explore the wild side in us. Though assertive they did not demean the whole thing.

Since last five years we have seen that ragging has crossed all its limits. When in limit ragging is one of the best icebreakers. Students interact and open up. Especially the newcomers come out of their shell. It makes one emerge out as confident persona.

The limit of law: A footnote to the tragedies
With suicides following ragging becoming more frequent, exposing the many loopholes in University rules and court guidelines,in failing to check the heinous activities, the pending Anti-Ragging Bill once again grabs the limelight. However, lawyers in the city point out the need for a bill, which is a balance of individual and constitutional rights.

The Anti-Ragging Bill, which has been pending since 2005 comes with its own limitations. To some extent,it breaches Articles 19 and 21. Article 19 deals with the freedom of expression and speech and Article 21 talks about the right to life and liberty.

The bills should be made in accordance with both individual and constitutional rights. Today, the bills only address individual rights, that is why they fail to stem the check of problems faced by students.
