Pune district is still 15 per cent short of its average normal rainfall and it is expected that the rainfall it receives in the next few days would make up for the deficit. Celebrations for the Ganpati festival may have to be watered down as the IMD on Thursday advised people to carry umbrellas while stepping out as it predicted that Pune and its neighbouring regions are likely to receive rainfall over the next five days.
A statement issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) read that due to the low-pressure area over south-west Jharkhand and its surrounding regions, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Vidharbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh for the next two days.
Pune and its surrounding region will receive light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lighting in the next five days, predicted the central weather forecasting department. Till 8.41pm on Thursday, the IMD reported 2.1mm rainfall in Shivajinagar while Lavale recorded the highest rainfall of 22.5mm. Chandrapur recorded 150mm rain, the highest in the state on Thursday.
Post August, the monsoon has been more less inactive, barring a few days in September. The fresh revival of monsoon comes as a much-needed relief from the long dry spell.
