A fire broke out at the Phoenix Mall in Viman Nagar on Friday afternoon. However, no one was injured in the incident, Pune Fire Brigade officials said.
The fire brigade control room received a call around 3.30 pm. Soon, five fire tenders and two water tankers were pressed into action. Thick smoke was coming out from the premises of a restaurant on the third floor of the mall. The fire was doused and the situation brought under control. Thereafter, cooling operation was initiated.
Chief Fire Officer Devendra Potphode said, “The fire started at a restaurant that was closed for the last few years. The cause of the fire is not confirmed yet. As the furniture inside the restaurant started burning, it caused a lot of smoke, which created panic at the mall for some time.”
“We have been visiting malls frequently to check the fire fighting mechanisms. We observed that the fire fighting system at the Phoenix mall was functioning properly. It helped in the fire fighting operation,” said Potphode.
The administration of the Phoenix Marketcity said the fire was promptly contained by mall staff and fire authorities. “Due to the immediate implementation of safety protocols, all occupants were safely evacuated, and there were no injuries or damage to property. We continue to prioritise the safety and well-being of our guests and staff,” the administration said in a statement.
