Giving a clear indication that Pune has arrived in the national corporate scene from the shadows of Mumbai,a survey conducted among IT managers in the city revealed that organisations requiring data storage capacities in the range of 6-10 terabytes are expecting a massive jump of 750 per cent in the coming years.

This increase is the highest in the country amongst other cities like Mumbai,Delhi,Hyderabad,Chennai and Bangalore, found the Data Explosion Survey conducted by NetApp-Nielsen.

Surajit Sen,director, marketing and alliances,NetApp India, said this increase in storage requirements across enterprises in Pune suggests the eventual need for deploying solutions to optimise storage costs, revisiting and upgrading storage policies. “The report findings clearly indicate that Pune-based enterprises face a data explosion challenge, which reflects the requirements for massive upgrades of storage capacities. It also points towards checking security and access control systems to ensure seamless integration and minimal financial impact of the increased capacity,” he said.

Further, the survey found that the organisations with a storage demand of over 25 terabytes capacity is expecting a 200 per cent growth by 2010. Another interesting fact that came up was that with the immense dependence of organisations on email for official use and employees engaging in mailing unsolicited ‘forwards’,there is constant pressure felt by IT managers to manage email traffic. IT managers in Hyderabad (37 per cent) are significantly more challenged with the task of managing email and attachments than their counterparts in other cities.

Other findings for the city include 92 per cent enterprises in the city disregard the need to have policies in place to manage remote office data backup (this is critical for smooth business operations considering the huge amount of data explosion that is foreseen in the city) Maintaining 24X7 access to data for all users has emerged as the biggest challenge here. Managing enterprise content has become one of the most important areas considering the amount of unstructured data in the organisations. “The demand for storage solutions is directly proportional to the digital data generated in enterprises in the city, which is growing at break-neck speed in all sectors across the country. We are witnessing a trend of more organisations migrating to higher storage capacity ranges,” said Sen.
