While most flight operations have moved to the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Pune International Airport (PIA), discussions on demolishing the old terminal are underway, said Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol at the Digi Yatra inaugural ceremony on Saturday.
Almost a year after the NITB’s inauguration, the wait is finally over, and the Digi Yatra service has been rolled out in the presence of Mohol, BJP Working President MLA Ravindra Chavan, State General Secretary Rajesh Pandey, and Pune Airport officials.
The new terminal, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024, spans 22,000 square metres and has an annual passenger handling capacity of ten million. However, due to technical reasons and a lack of necessary permissions, the Digi Yatra facility had been pending for the past year. Even after operations began in July, numerous complaints regarding non-functional Digi Yatra services were received, sparking outrage among passengers.
According to the Minister, this service will now bring relief to passengers flying from Pune and streamline the boarding process. He said, “Digi Yatra is available at 24 airports across the country, and so far, 4 crore (70 percent) passengers have benefited from it. With this facility, the time required for document security checks at the airport has been completely eliminated, allowing passengers to enter the airport seamlessly. This service has been launched using cutting-edge technology and will soon be expanded to other airports.”
Speaking about the renovation of the old terminal, Mohol stated that around 80 percent of domestic and international flights are now operating from the new terminal, and the old one will be demolished within a few months. “While discussions on the demolition are ongoing with the concerned authorities, the old terminal will also be redeveloped in a lavish and modern way, similar to the new one,” he said.
