‘Psychology not an imported science’

That psychology is imported is a wrong notion, which is dangerous for the growth of the subject, said Dr Janak Pandey.

He was delivering the keynote address during the interdisciplinary seminar on ‘Psychology and Education – Thinking young for effecting change’ organised by Sahyadri Hospitals to mark the launch of their Child Guidance Centre. Pandey’s speech covered various aspects of psychology, right from its history to its current status. He said that ever since psychology originated in Leipzig,Germany,in 1879 and was introduced to India in the early 19th century at Kolkata University, many have an incorrect notion of psychology being an ‘imported’ science, which has serious implications in terms of strong denial of existence of psychology in India.

He also introduced the audience to the three forms of psychology including commonsense, people’s psychology and scientific psychology. According to him, scientific psychology (like in psychophysics) formulates laws which become the universal knowledge of psychology but the other two don’t need for one to be taught within the discipline. We are born with the former. These laws often do not take the aspect of culture into consideration and hence fail to deliver results despite tall claims about extensive research within these domains,he said.

Pandey sought an example, saying although motivation is universal,’what’ motivates us – changes from person to person,Here, culture plays an important role. He emphasised the need to take the cultural aspect into consideration while practicing psychology. He also expressed concern over psychology being caught within the boundaries of a classroom, though it’s a science that needs to practice outside the classrooms.

It is these 2 aspects that the child guidance centre model being followed by Sahyadri hospitals wishes to inculcate and that attracted him into taking time out to be here when it happens.

Dr. Malavika Kapur,an eminent psychologists in the area of Child and Adolescent Psychology, who has been Head of Department,NIMHANS,elaborated the importance of art and play in child psychology.
