Prayas Energy another finalist for Google Impact Challenge

Winner will receive a Global Impact Award from Google.

City-based Prayas Energy Group has emerged as the another finalist for the Google Impact Challenge. Winner of the challenge will receive a Global Impact Award from Google,which supports entrepreneurial non-profit organisations through technology to tackle some of the worlds biggest challenges.

Prayas aims at improving the quality of supply and fairness in distribution of electricity in India,said a release. Electricity consumers in India often face poor quality supply in the form of frequent interruptions,load shedding/ blackouts,and low voltage levels.

This forces them to invest heavily in alternative power supply sources and voltage stabilising devices or suffer inconvenience and loss of productivity. The problem is more severe in rural and semi-urban areas.

The group is working to improve power distribution quality by deploying a network of real-time sensors to monitor power supply provided by utility companies.

Consumers,civil societies,researchers and regulatory commissions will have open access to this information which can be used to increase accountability of power utilities.

Over three years,Prayas will collect data from 2,500 sites across the country and make this data accessible online. It will be used to hold utility providers responsible for services. The voting for the four finalists will end on October 30.
