Earlier, civic body was against the plan to purchase AC buses from JNNURM fund
Putting an end to the controversy over purchase of new buses, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) on Saturday decided to add 500 non-air conditioned (non-AC) CNG buses to its existing fleet. Earlier,it had planned to go for air conditioned (AC) buses.
PMPML chairman and managing director Dilip Band made a presentation on the plan for implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in the city. The meeting was attended by all the board of directors, including officials and office bearers of both the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
Earlier, the PMPML had floated a tender for purchase of AC and non-AC buses. However, the PMC had protested, saying that the civic body was against such a move and had already passed a resolution that AC buses should not be purchased from the funds provided by the civic body under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The PMPML will drop the idea of purchasing AC buses and will only add non-AC buses to its fleet. The order will be released before the end of this fiscal, said Band after the meeting.
After the members of PMPML board of directors raised objection on the construction of bus stops in the centre of the road that are likely to result in congestion,Band said the decision on construction of bus stops would be taken later on depending on the width of the road.
The PCMC also ensured that it would contribute 30 per cent of the civic body share for the purpose. Mayor Yogesh Behl said his civic body would contribute 50 per cent share while the standing committee chairman assured 30 per cent of the contribution.
