On Tuesday, the Pune Municipal Corporation claimed that it has removed 750 of a few thousand banners that have come up in the city. Many of them have been put by politicians, including ruling Congress and NCP alliance,to congratulate the new Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
We have an extensive drive against the illegal hoardings and banners in the city. The action is limited to removing hoardings and not against those putting it, said Ramesh Shelar of PMCs Anti-encroachment cell.
The only time that political hoardings are not visible in the city is during election code of conduct as politicians fear action by ethe Election Commission. The banners and hoardings are put up by politicians and their activists in every lane of the city.
Congress leader Ulhas Bagul said hoardings and banners come up as they are the best option for activists to express their feelings.
There is no doubt that every hoarding should be put up after permission from the civic body. The administration too should simplify the process of granting permission for hoardings by political activists as they are occasional for few days, he said.
The political leaders in power merely speak against the hoardings and banners. Prithviraj Chavans step to ensure that the hoardings are pulled down was a welcome step, BJP leader Mukta Tilak said.
