Perfectly Placed

Using a unique approach to their placement season COEP is ensuring that all their students are getting the right exposure for jobs

Using a unique approach to their placement season COEP is ensuring that all their students are getting the right exposure for jobs

For students at the College of Engineering Pune (COEP),hunting for jobs related to their courses, over the years, has not been a difficult task. Having been established as a brand on the lines of the IIT’s the institute has been a happy hunting ground for companies that look to offer jobs to the students here. This year despite the slowdown hitting companies across all sectors most of the students at the COEP have had little to complain about. And that is true because numbers speak for themselves. In a batch of 600 students, ever since the placement season began on August 6,around 80 of them or just over ten percent of the batch has already been placed. With more companies lined up over the next month and a half the placement scene in the institute has not just vastly improved for the students but also for the companies that come to hire them.

Under the new placement rules the Training and Placement (TNP) cell has made a considerable number of changes that have had a positive response from companies and the students too. Prof. Sandeep Meshram, who heads the TNP cell says,“Earlier we had a three job holding policy for the students. Under this a student could sit for a campus interview for a software company,a core branch company and also for what we call ‘dream job’ companies. Basically a student was allowed to have three jobs in hand at one time.” What had happened since then was that companies were unhappy about the same. “It was ironic because these companies were offering higher packages in comparison to others and students would just take the job and then eventually reject it for a higher paying one. Hence we decided to change the same,” he adds.

Under the new clauses,Meshram says that after a lot of debates at the senate meetings along with student representatives they got a one job only holding policy. He says,“But we modified it to suit both the companies as well as the students. For instance if a software firm came for recruitment then only students from the Computer,IT and Electronics department can sit for the same. While for core companies like Tata Motors only branches like Mechanical and Metallurgy will be allowed to sit.”

And so far the results speak for the new policies that have been put in place. DE Shaw, which was the first company to come in on August 6 took only two students. But Oracle and Tata Motors have both hired 17 students each. Amongst others companies like Symantec,Nvidia,Imagination Technology have also hired students. Meshram says,“Incidentally even the companies have been giving a positive feedback because of this new policy and the students too are happy about it.” Over the next few days core companies like Bajaj Auto,Loda Group,SKF Bearings and Tata Housing are slated to visit the campus to offer the students jobs.

However in the case of dream jobs (Companies offering salaries in excess of 7.5 Lakhs per annum) Meshram says that all students, despite holding a job,who fit the criteria will be allowed to sit for them. “Next month we have four companies coming from Japan, which will be offering very high salaries. All students who are eligible can appear for the same even if they already hold a job. It will ensure not just healthy competition but also enable all of them to give in their best during the interviews,” he adds.
