Citizens of Kharadi have been suffering due to severe drinking water shortage. Efforts by the civic authorities have resulted in somewhat improving the sitatuion but the problem is still far from being resolved. A project to draw water from the Bhama Askhed dam to meet the demand has not yet started.
The PMC draws water from Khadakwasla,Panshet and Varasgaon dam to meet the water demand of the city. It lifts water from Parvati,Warje and Wadgaon Budhruk pumping stations. All these pumping stations are located away from Kharadi making it the end recipient of water through the existing network.
The area has been reeling under water shortage with citizens often taking to streets to get the civic body notice their problems. The failure of the administration had also made citizens rely on water tanker services.
There is no one to resolve our problem of water shortage. After several agitations, the PMC has been able to partly resolve the issue but we are not getting sufficient supply and have to pay to get water through water tankers, said Alka Tingare.
There has been a slight improvement in the water supply, she said adding that the supply is at odd hours which again inconveniences citizens.
Another resident,Vikram Shinde, said he had bought a property in the area as his office is located nearby. I used to travel a long distance earlier to come to my office in Kharadi. I bought an apartment in Kharadi to avoid the daily travel but now water scarcity is of major concern for me, he said.
NCP legislator Bapu Pathare said that it was after repeatedly taking up the issue with the PMC that water woes have been partly addressed.
The new pipeline has been laid and it has increased the availability of water to citizens of the area. The number of citizens relying on water tankers have gone down, he said adding that there should be a permanent solution for the area.
The PMC had planned drawing water from Bhama Askhed dam to meet the demand of water of the citizens of the area. A provision of Rs 60 crore was made in the budget two years ago,but the project has been non-starter and pending for apporval with a high power committee.
Pathare said that the state government would soon give a no objection certificate for the project and the PMC should not come up with more excuses for failure to implement the project.
