Though Fulora Garden Restaurant lacks a bit in the ambience, the food more than makes up for it

Marketyard is the area of Pune where all the agricultural products, whether processed or non-processed,are brought. Tucked away in a corner of this part of Pune is the Fulora Garden Restaurant, with an option of both indoor and outdoor seating. As we take our seats,we can’t help but notice: the restaurant is done up very well, something akin to a Marathi haveli of the 18th century, but with time, and perhaps a slight bit of neglect, this restaurant has gone slightly to seed, though the surroundings suggest that this was once a very glamorous affair.

Satish Gade, the long-serving manager of this restaurant (he has been here for 17 years) says,“We started way back in 1982,and for a long time, ours was the only restaurant in this part of the city. That is why, many people who have shifted out of this part of town still come back; they are all familiar to us,and us to them.”

We start off with a starter, the Chicken Chai-Wo,a boneless dish that is slightly sweet, with a tangy red sauce, with just a hint of mint in it. After that,we sample the fish chatpata, another boneless preparation akin to a fish tikka with a green hot and sour sauce. This, however,is slightly disappointing as the fish doesn’t seem to have been marinated long enough: some pieces seem just a tad bit boiled.

After that,we dive straight into the main course. The prices seem a little on the high side, but when we are served,we realise why: the portions are enormous. The chicken banjara is just perfect: tasty, with pieces that almost melt in the mouth, this dish misses an ingredient that is usually present in large quantities: oil. The gravy does not have a top layer of oil, which does not mean that it is oil-free. It is merely very well cooked.

“Our restaurant has three sections – one is the garden area, where parties can also take place, the other is the family area, and the third is where all the local businessmen come after a hard day’s work,” says Gade.

All in all,the food is very pleasant, even if the ambience needs a little work. Perhaps not the best place to bring your date, though a great place to chill out with your friends.
