On The Turf

After two months of incessant showers, the rain clouds finally let up on the bright and warm Sunday – a perfect racing day. In the members’ enclosure, race goers were dressed to the nines – the men in smart jackets in cool blues and whites, the women in neon colours and in classic black and white. The band played familiar melodies like Love Me Do and Sweet Home Alabama, while people began to gather in anticipation of the race. As the afternoon progressed, more people gathered at the course; many even made it a family outing, with their children in tow. It was to be the first major race day of the season, with the Turf Club Trophy up for grabs. On such days,it’s near impossible to miss the excitement at the race course. Not near the tracks, where enthusiasts waited for the horses to approach, and several men hoisted their young children on their shoulders. Not even in the cloakrooms, where attendants sat and listened carefully to the commentary, exclaiming when c and Rajasthan Royals tied for the Turf Club Trophy (Grade 3).
