Father’s Day may be catching on,but it’s still not a patch on the kind of emotions Mother’s Day evokes. Here’s telling why…

The day has been given a step motherly treatment. For while the third Sunday of June remains a popular holiday in the western world, the day observed as the Father’s Day worldwide strives to establish its identity in India. And there’s little denying the fact that when compared to emotions that are stirred on Mother’s Day,Father’s Day still lags far behind. This despite the fact that many children may share a closer bond with dad than mom. Like Malu Menon. A banker by profession Malu has been her Dad’s daughter and says her sister and she has always felt more comfortable with their dad then mom. But she agrees that mother’s day has always received its fair share of love and affection. “ A mother has always been there to instill family values in the child and maybe that’s a reason why father’s have always been assigned a secondary role as to mothers.”

The father – son duo of Jacob an Mobin Kurien Jacob Kurien, list out cultural significance of the popular status of Mother’s day over Father’s day,“A probable reason for Father’s Day is not very popular is the fact that the day was established to complement Mother’s Day. In India, emphasis on the bonding between mother and child is more common than fathers and the children.”

While the son feels Mother’s Day evokes intense feelings for his mom,Father’s Day too does the same. “Dad might not be an expressive person but he has always been there to give good advice. The most important thing that he has ever said to me is that one should always dwell on the future and not in the past.”

According to some despite fathers being more fun and less strict these dys a degree of formality still remains with fathers that perhaps restrict emotions to an extent.Nikunj Tamboli,a computer-engineering student, says,“Our relation is based more on mutual respect. I am casual with dad but not as open as with my mom.”

His father Bhagwati Tamboli agrees,“No matter how friendly fathers are with their children usually are more open to mothers.”

Harish Ludhrani,an entrepreneur says,“In a child’s upbringing the mother’s role has been glorified. Also,in today’s modern times Mother’s Day has been better publicised than Father’s Day. Another important factor could be the fact that since fathers have never been very expressive with their love. While the debate on the importance of the day still continues, here is wishing all the fathers in the city a Happy Father’s Day.
