The Maharashtra Public Service Examination (MPSC) has decided to introduce the percentile system to shortlist candidates for interviews after the main examinations. Thus, the present system of shortlisting candidates for interviews based on percentage system will be scrapped.
In a notice issued on October 24,the MPSC declared the minimum percentile criteria for different category candidates. Applicants from the general category will have to score a minimum of 35 percentile, those from backward category 30 percentile, and beneficiaries of quota for sportspersons and physically challenged will have to score 20 percentile to qualify for the interview.
The reform, which has been introduced on the lines of the current screening practice followed by IIT (JEE) and CAT,among other national level examinations, was one of the steps the MPSC had taken to raise the standard of its examinations, the commission secretary said.
Described as a comparison score,in the percentile system,a percentile is a number between 1 and 100 that compares a candidates performance to other students, who appeared for the exam. In the percentage system,a student is given a per cent number that is related only to her performance in a test or examination.
Candidates, three times the number of vacancies required to be filled by the government, can be called for an interview on the basis of performance in the written examination.
Vishwanath Patil, director of Prithvi Academy, said the move would ensure that none of the declared government posts remained vacant. The MPSC has to call candidates, three times the number of vacancies. Earlier,as the system of percentage was followed, posts were left vacant as the required criteria could not be fulfilled, he said.
Patil added that the MPSC should also focus on the quality of questions in order to improve the overall standard of its examination.
Vikas Ratnaparkhe,an MPSC aspirant, while welcoming the decision, said, It will benefit the candidates and posts will no longer remain vacant.
The MPSC has announced the schedule for the examinations that will be held in 2014. The details of the exam are available on the commission website http://www.mpsc.gov.in.
