Sending out election slips to voters with details of their polling booth is passe. An android application now enables candidates to send SMS and e-mail to voters in his/her ward, giving details of their polling booth, making it easier for them to go out and vote.
The application iElection, which can be bought from the Android Market,is developed by Dr Shailesh Deshpande,founder-director of city-based Intellection Software and Technologies Private Limited. Till recently, political workers used to physically sort names and send these slips to voters. It is a very tedious and time-consuming job. Alternatively, the iElection is a faster and easier option for both the candidates and the voters, Deshpande said.
The application is developed for the tablets using Android 2.2 version and above. Any candidate who buys iElection gets a login-id and password according to the party he/she belong to. It also comes with a database of voters in that candidates ward, which is acquired from the local municipal corporation and the election commission. After entering a voters name,his/her polling station, room number and poll booth number will reflect on the screen. The user can send the information by SMS to that voter with the click of a button after entering the voters mobile number, Deshpande said.
An added feature is that if the address or age is wrong in the existing database, one can correct it and will be saved in the tablet. However, even if any changes are made to the database by any user, they are not visible to other users.
Deshpande said the difference between using the present available search engines and this application is the SMS facility that reaches out to the voters directly. There is no need for voters to crowd at the polling stations, he said. Deshpande pointed out that at 40 per cent,Pune saw its worst ever turnout in the recent Lok Sabha elections. A major reason for the low turnout was that many were unable to find their name on the list or the names were simply missing. This application is likely to bridge the gap between the information needed by voters and what is made available by the election commission, he said.
Deshpande has given a demonstration of this application to various party chiefs in the city and PMC officials. The price of the application with the tablet will be between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000.
