The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has come up a financial policy for sportspersons who excel at national and international events. As per the policy,sportspersons from Pimpri-Chinchwad who win gold medals in Olympics will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh,those winning silver will get Rs 2 lakh award and bronze medal winners will get Rs 1 lakh award.

The gold medal winner of Commonwealth Games will get Rs 2 lakh while silver medal winner will get Rs 1 lakh and bronze medal winner Rs 50,000. Mayor Yogesh Behl said the amount would given only to sportspersons from Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Behl said the sports policy was approved at a recent sports committee meeting presided over by chairman Rajesh Pillay. The policy will take effect after it is approved by the civic general body meeting,the mayor said.

Swimming pool in MIDC area
Even as the PCMC struggles to keep its swimming pools up and running,the civic standing committee has sanctioned a new pool,which will come up in MIDC area. The committee sanctioned Rs 1.78 crore for constructing the pool in “G” Block of MIDC area.

The committee in its meeting on Tuesday also approved Rs 2 crore for various development works. It sanctioned Rs 72,000 for purchasing question paper sets for Class 10 students of civic-run second school. Chairman Prashant Shitole presided over the meeting.

‘Join fight against AIDS’
Mayor Yogesh Behl has urged youngsters to come forward for creating awareness about AIDS while addressing a rally organised jointly by the PCMC and the Padmashree Dr D Y Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Research on the occasion of AIDS Day.

PCMC medical director Rajshekhar Iyyer,Dr Suhas M and Dr Avinash Deshpande were among those present. Students of the college staged a street play on the disease.

“There is a pressing need to create awareness about AIDS,” Behl said. Around 350 students participated in the rally.

Nigdi group play wins prize
‘Nut Navacha Natak’,a play staged by Atharva Theatres of Nigdi,in the 50th state-level play competition has won the third prize in the Pune division.

Dr Sanjeev Kumar,who performed the role of Bhausaheb,won the first prize in the individual category. Rupali Pathare also won an award for outstanding performance.

Samir Mone had written the script of the play and Dr Sanjeev Kumar Patil had directed it. The play will be staged at Pimpri-Chinchwad auditorium on December 11.

‘Jail bharo’ agitation held
A ‘jail bharo’ agitation against commercialisation of education and demanding a flat for Rs 1.5 lakh for slum-dwellers was staged by Kashtakari Kamgar Panchayat and Akhil Bharatiya Samajwadi Adaypan Sabha at Pimpri on Thursday. Socialist leaders,Bhai Vaidya and Baba Kamble,led the agitation which saw participation from corporator Maruti Bhapkar,Ramesh Shinde,etc.
