NCP manages to convince Cong,Chandere standing panel chief

The Congress support to the NCP candidate, however, was not without a give and take plank.

Fearing that Opposition might taking advantage of the differences within the ruling alliance, the Nationalist Congress Party on Monday succeeded in convincing its alliance partner,Congress,to elect its corporator,Baburao Chandere,as chairman of the standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The Congress support to the NCP candidate, however, was not without a give and take plank. The Congress has apparently bargained for getting party corporators elected as the chairperson on other civic committees. The PMC is yet to elect chairperson for City Improvements Committee,Legal Committee,Women and Child Welfare Committee and the Sports Committee.

In the elections for the standing committee, which holds the key for financial matters,NCP corporator Chandere bagged nine votes, six of NCP and three of Congress,to defeat BJP corporator Srinath Bhimale, who managed to garner four votes – three of BJP and one of Shiv Sena. The MNS too had decided to contest for the coveted post with party corporator Kishore Shinde filing his nomination, but withdrew.

This has made it clear that the budget will have the stamp of the ruling NCP with its corporator heading the standing committee as chairman. ‘

“The civic budget is pending and needs to be approved soo. One will work on it in the next few days and get it approved,” said Chandere after he was elected as chairman.

He said the focus would be on taking up projects to resolve water crisis and public transport system.

“I am confident of getting the agenda of party through with the help of a partner. There are no differences with Congress and all the development work would be implementely ,” he said.

Last year,BJP corporator Ganesh Bidkar was elected the chairperson of standing committee after the Congress refused to vote in favour of the NCP corporator. Though there was an alliance of NCP and Congress, the differences in the alliance partner paved the way for a BJP candidate to get elected.

The election for the chairperson of other committees would be held on March 30 and the Congress is likely to get its member head two committees. The nomination for the post of chairperson for other committees were filed together.
