NCP dominates poll results

NCP re-emerged as the single largest party in the Pune Municipal Corporation but failed to garner complete majority to have a free hand in civic affairs of the city.

Overcoming anti-incumbency threat, the NCP re-emerged as the single largest party in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) but failed to garner complete majority to have a free hand in civic affairs of the city. The MNS was the biggest gainer while the Shiv Sena and the Congress had their strength reduced. The BJP retained its strength in the civic body.

In the house of 152,the NCP will have 51 representatives while the MNS is the second largest party with 29 followed by Congress with 28,BJP with 26 and Shiv Sena with 15. Two RPI candidates and an Independent were also elected.

The NCP had emerged the single largest party in 2007,uprooting the Congress from power. It allied with the saffron combine initially to keep the Congress out of power but in the second half of the five-year term. the party had to shake hands with the Congress.

With no full majority, the NCP has no alternative other than look for an ally to hold power in the civic body. New equations may now well emerge from the current result as the MNS too has the opportunity to share power in PMC if it joins hands with the NCP.

The sulking Congress struggled to retain its strength as it was contesting in the backdrop of the absence of city MP Suresh Kalmadi. Its 28 seats is far less than its figure of 35 in 2007.This election proved to be a eyeopener for Shiv Sena which was reduced to 15,five less than its 20 seats in 2007. The BJP has managed to hold on to its 26 seats.

The new general body will be dominated by youth, with veterans, including mayor Mohansingh Rajpal of NCP and deputy mayor Prasanna Jagtap, getting defeated along with former mayors Rajlaxmi Bhosale,Rajani Tribhuvan and Suresh Shevale.

A total of 100 sitting corporators across various parties will not be seen in the new general body as 38 stayed away from the contest after the new reservations came into place and around 50 had to taste defeat.

The two-member panel system helped the MNS increase its tally from 8 to 29 as they managed to win both the seats in most of the panels where they won. The MNS success makes them the second largest party in the civic body, now on a par with the Congress that ruled the civic body for long.
