The archaeological museum to come up at Deccan College, one of the oldest and renowned institutes in the city, will be completed in 15 months. As the state government recently granted Rs 33.33 lakh as part of the second phase budget, the foundation work is expected to be over in the next three months.

In a bid to make the archaeological work of the Deccan College accessible to public, the college had come out with a plan to build a museum on its campus. The college has also been conferred deemed university status by the MHRD.

“The institute had submitted the plan to the state government two years ago and on February 4,the government okayed a total subsidy of Rs 3.5 crore in phases,” said G B Deglurkar, president of the college.

The government gave Rs 1 crore to the college in 2008-09. On March 3,it came out with a resolution to give Rs 33.33 lakh as a part of the second phase. “We have received the letter from the government and with this grant we can complete the foundation work soon,” said Vasant Shinde, joint director of Deccan College.

“The college has a museum in its archaeological department. However,it is small and used for academic purpose. Whenever outside people visit this museum we find difficulty in handling academic and visitors simultaneously. So,we proposed an independent building for the museum,” Shinde said. “The museum will have galleries in which sketches, weapons, inscriptions and paintings of Satvahana,Copper Age,Gupta,Hadappa and Maratha-Muslim period will be displayed,” he said.
