MPSC: High scorers get low posts due to error in data

A wrong data entry has led to an irregularity in the recently declared results of Maharashtra Public Service Commission’s 2006 exams forcing the MPSC to keep the results in abeyance.

A wrong data entry has led to an irregularity in the recently declared results of Maharashtra Public Service Commission’s (MPSC) 2006 exams forcing the MPSC to keep the results in abeyance. Due to this errors in data entry of preferences given by the candidates, many, who scored high, have got postings below class I rank. The MPSC has put a notice on its website making this announcement. The notice also says that once the error is rectified, the results might change. This has drawn severe criticism from the candidates.

The results were declared on June 8. According to the notice, many candidates approached the MPSC with complaints that despite ample scores, they have not got the post of their preference. On the other hand, some candidates with lower marks got higher posts.

The 398 selected candidates have scored in the range of 850 to 1,190 out of 2,000. The candidates with very good scores get deputy collector posts. This time,14 preferences of posts were available including deputy collector, deputy superintendent of police, tehsildar, nayab tehsildar, chief officer and so on. Some of the posts are of class I officers while some are of class II officers. Though the marking was correct, the candidates getting higher marks have been given posts of class II officers and the candidates with lesser scores have got class I posts.

The MPSC notice says,“The irregularity has occurred owing to wrong entry of preferences given by the candidates. The MPSC regrets the mistake.”

The commission has put up the old merit list on the website and has appealed all candidates to check whether their preferences are correct or not. “The candidates are requested to submit the application latest by June 27 if they find any irregularity,” says the notice displayed by deputy secretary of examination department of MPSC.

The candidates, however, are enraged over this blunder. “Now,if the merit list changes, someone who is presently in the merit list may go out. It will be a great humiliation for him/her,” said Shama Dhok, who has ranked first in the MPSC 2006 exams.

Savita Kulkarni, coordinator of Dnyan Prabodhini Competitive Exams Centre, said it is high time the MPSC changed its way of functioning. “The commission is already infamous for announcing the results late. Last time it had published wrong answer key and now it has made a blunder,” she said.

The MPSC,in the notice, has declared that from next time it would announce the provisional merit list before the final one to avoid such instances. “The candidates will be given time to post their grievances on the provisional merit list and the final merit list will be announced after clearing those grievances,” says the notice.
