Four members of a family, including two teenagers, sustained critical burn injuries in a fire that started in their house in the Mohammadwadi area of Pune in the early hours of Wednesday. Initial statements of the injured suggests that the fire started due to the explosion of leaked cooking gas, a police officer said.

The fire took place around 4.30 am in a flat on the second floor of a building in Sai Colony in Wadkar Mala area of Mohammadwadi. The injured have been identified as Tekchansingh Chauhan, 42, his wife Bebi, 38, daughter Kashish, 18, and son Nikhil, 15. The family had moved to Pune just 10 days ago from their native place in Uttar Pradesh. All are currently being treated at Sassoon General Hospital for their serious burn injuries.

Mansingh Patil, Inspector, Kalepadal Police Station, said, “The husband and wife have sustained very severe injuries, with 70 per cent burns. The two children have sustained close to 30 per cent burns. They were initially taken to a private hospital and were later shifted to Sassoon General Hospital. Initial observation suggests that one of the burners of the cooking gas stove remained on leading to heavy leakage of the gas. When Bebi Chauhan woke up in the morning, she smelled cooking gas. To check if there was a leak, she used a lighter which caused the explosion and subsequent fire.”
