India’s celebrated supermodel and fitness icon, Milind Soman, officially flagged off the third edition of the Unity Run on Saturday from Pune. This year’s event marks the commencement of a 240-km barefoot run, culminating at the historic Naigaon–Vasai Virar Fort. The Unity Run, now in its third year, is a powerful tribute to the nation’s 78th Independence Day, symbolising unity, peace, and perseverance.
Reflecting on the significance of the Unity Run, Milind Soman said, “This run is not just a personal challenge but a celebration of what binds us as a nation. Each step I take is a tribute to India’s strength and diversity. I look forward to connecting with communities along the way and encouraging everyone to embrace a healthier, more active lifestyle.”
He said, “Running over 200-400 km is a self-challenge, as I love taking challenges. But youngsters and newbies who will join in the running should at least start by 10-15 km per day. For 15 years, I have been running barefoot which was a big challenge for me but now I love it. It depends on the type of road, if it’s in the desert then I put on my footwear. I choose to put on my shoes when I feel it’s the right time.”
Supported by Ampere Nexus and Lifelong, the Unity Run 2024 will unfold over four days, concluding on August 13. During the run, Milind Soman will traverse scenic landscapes and culturally significant locations, including key stops in Lonavala and Panvel, before reaching his final destination. The event aims at highlighting Maharashtra’s rich cultural heritage while fostering a sense of national pride and solidarity.
The Unity Run will also feature several community engagement activities at various stops. Local residents will have the opportunity to interact with Milind Soman and participate in fitness initiatives designed to inspire individuals to prioritise their physical well-being. These activities will reinforce the core values of unity and resilience, central to the spirit of the run.
Since its inception in 2021, the Unity Run has grown into a symbol of determination and national pride. The inaugural run saw Milind Soman cover 420 km from Mumbai to Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat, in just eight days, overcoming numerous challenges along the way. The second edition in 2022 extended the journey to 450 km from Jhansi to the Red Fort in Delhi, with a focus on promoting women’s empowerment.
