British rock band Jethro Tull is famous for its album,Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll; Too Young to Die!,a phrase which seems to perfectly sum up Indus Creed’s predicament. Surely a guy in his forties is too old to play metal? The band members, who performed at the SMokies Oktoberfest on Sunday, beg to differ. Once they begin to play their music, age and time have no meaning.

“It is wrong to say that one should stop subscribing to a particular genre of music because of their age. Look at Iron Maiden,Bob Dylan; they are still going strong at their age,so why can’t we?” reasons lead vocalist Uday Benegal.

Indus Creed started off in 1984 as ‘Rock Machine’ and released their first album ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Renegade’ in ’89,which was India’s first original rock album. In ’93,its name was changed to Indus Creed and by the time the band split in the late ’90s,it had released three albums.

“We have been pretty lucky – we have played in front of audiences from three separate generations. In the ’80s,people wanted to hear songs that they knew. By the ’90s,the mindset changed – the audience still wanted to listen to covers, but were willing to accept the stuff that we came out with,” says Benegal.

Unfortunately, soon after, the band split. “Two of us,Jayesh Gandhi, the guitarist, and I were transferred to New York,so we decided to call it quits,” recalls Benegal. However,a couple of years ago,Benegal moved back to India and wanted to restart the band. And after joining with two of the original members and adding two new members,Indus Creed was ready to play again. The current line up is Benegal on vocals,Mahesh Tinaikar on guitars,Zubin Balaporia on keyboards,Rushad Mistry on bass and Jai Row Kavi on drums.

“We are still a band that essentially makes melodic, high energy, rock music. However, our sound has become harder, and perhaps more mature. The audience too expects original compositions, which is a positive step forward,” signs off Benegal.
