Through ‘Ayushyawar Bolu Kahi’ music composer Dr Saleel Kulkarni and poet-lyricist Sandeep Khare are all set to take music and poetry enthusiasts in the city on a musical journey.

It was in 2003 that Dr Saleel Kulkarni,a music composer and Sandeep Khare,a poet and lyricist gave their debut performance together. In such a short span, the duo has completed almost 850 shows held across the world. On May 12,they are going to present yet another performance titled ‘Ayushyawar Bolu Kahi’,an amalgamation of music and poetry.

“Although we started our journey in Pune since the city is our home but we have performed all over India as well as overseas including the US,the UK,Australia and more,” says Dr Kulkarni.

The performance by the duo includes all kinds of music and poetry, from folk to modern day film music and also famous children’s songs by Dr Kulkarni. The show has an audience from different age groups claim the duo,and to keep these regulars hooked on to the show, the two artistes take effort to add something new in their each performance. “Every single show has either a new song or a poem. We focus a lot on our audience and keep experimenting,” added Kulkarni.

Question them whether after eight years of performances together, they feel a pressure to perform something new each time,Khare says,“I don’t think so because poetry is something that just flows naturally and it cannot be rushed. Good poetry can never come out of pressure. Besides,we also work together on other projects quiet often. So far,it has worked well.”

The artistes admit that they had not expected the show to become such a phenomenon. “The first show in Pune was followed by performances in other cities in the state. As we kept doing more shows,we kept getting more and more requests to perform in other states and countries. We did not plan; it just happened,” says Khare.

The performers are pleasantly surprised to see an increase in the number of youngsters sitting in their audiences. “It is really heart-warming. Since this is a poetry programme, one doesn’t expect the younger ones to take such keen interest in it,” says Kulkarni.

(‘Ayushyawar Bolu Kahi’ will be performed on May 12 at Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha,Kothrud from 9.30 pm onwards)
