MCOCA against ‘Maharaja Gang’

The Pune police on Friday booked nine persons associated with the “Maharaja Gang” in Wajre,under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

The Pune police on Friday booked nine persons associated with the “Maharaja Gang” in Wajre,under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Members of the gang had gone on a rampage damaging about 15 private vehicles after assaulting 29-year-old Vijay Sashte on May 19.

The suspects have been identified as Arvind Maruti Madkar,Nitin alias Bhavdya Nivrutti Sapkal,Nitin alias Tundya Jadhav,Vishal Kisan Gaikwad,Mahesh Pandurang Bhagat,Kiran Bhimrao Sutkar,Vinayak Rajaram Bhagat,Vyankatesh alias Viki Shivshankar Anpur and Rohit Surendra Shinde,all residents of Warje-Malwadi area.

They along with two minors had allegedly assaulted Vijay Sashte with weapons at his residence in Datta Nagar,Warje following a six-month old dispute. After the incident,the gangsters damaged 15 private vehicles parked on public roads in Warje. An offence was registered against the suspects at the Warje Malwadi police station.

Senior inspector Sunil Darekar of the police station said,“The gang was initially led by a history sheeter Tukaram Bhagat of Warje. Tukaram’s aides used to call him “Maharaja”. The group operated in the name of “Maharaja Gang”. But after Tukaram committed suicide in 2001,Arvind Madkar became the gang leader.” “The gang was active in Warje area since 2009, and is mainly involved in offences such as assault,rioting and possession of illegal weapons. Madkar has six crimes registered against him. All other gang members also have a crime history. Recently,they were arrested in the case of assault and damaging private vehicles in Warje. The gang was committing offences in an organised manner. We have thus booked nine members of the gang under MCOCA,” Darekar said. With this,cops have booked members of about 10 gangs and arrested 66 persons under the MCOCA in the last two years.
