Matter of Style

As Pune gets set for the season’s first big race today,we talk to a bunch of regulars to get a sneak peak at their style statements

Going to the races is all about making decisions. The process of relying on your intuition starts much before placing stakes on the winning horse, when one picks what to wear. As the monsoon coincides with racing season in Pune,race-goers are looking to balance style with comfort.

“Though the races are supposed to be a stylish event, one must keep the weather in mind. It is funny when people wear sequined velvet gowns in this humid weather,” says singer Anaida Parvaneh,a regular at the big races. She prefers to make a subtle, understated style statement which is regal and classy without being over the top. Admitting to being a “moody dresser”,Parvaneh says she is in a phase of experimenting with the Bohemian look. “I am going to try and blend Bohemian and classy together for the look I want to carry at the races this year. I may pair Bohemian prints and style with classy cuts and material,” she adds.

Damini Oberoi, another regular at the race course, says a dash of colour is important at such events to brighten up the gloomy monsoon. But since she is fascinated with monochromatic trends, which made a huge comeback in the international fashion scene in the past season, she will introduce a splash of colour in the form of hats and accessories. “Coral is the colour for me. I am waiting to carry off a black and white dress teamed with coral accessories,” says Oberoi.

She is also delighted to bring out her fascinator — a fancy headgear with a portion of net that falls on the face covering the eyes. “In India, you really can’t indulge in dressing up in a fancy way like they do abroad. We can’t wear gloves and stuff, but the fascinator is something I can carry off,” she adds. A casual-chic look is what city-based fashion designer Nivedita Saboo will wear to the races. She says she will pay more attention to comfort by pairing structured dresses in printed linen with formal accessories. “I want to carry off a classy look without looking stiff. The idea is to keep the comfort quotient high,” she says.

Linen seems to be a favorite with the fashionsitas at the race course. Umang Pittie,Business Development Executive,Raja Bahadur International, which hosts the The Raja Bahadur Pittie Million race, says his style statement will include a range of linen suits. “I will wear a brooch to put a fancy patch on to the linen jacket. When I attended the races in Mumbai,I experimented with hats. I think I will be doing the same for the Pune season as well,” says Pittie.
