A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly marrying a minor girl and raping her in Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune in Maharashtra.

Acting on a complaint lodged by the girl on Thursday, police have also booked 15 others, including family members, for allegedly arranging her marriage despite knowing that she was a minor.

The accused have been booked under sections 376 (3) (rape of a girl under 16), 354 (assault with intent to outrage modesty), 354A (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

Police said the girl was forced to marry the man in January. It is alleged in the FIR that till May, her husband forcibly had sex with her about six times and also abused and thrashed her.

Police inspector R S Rajmane said, “The girl told her mother about the harassment by her husband. The mother approached the police. An investigation revealed that the girl was a minor at the time of her marriage. An FIR was registered and the girl’s husband arrested. Further investigations are on.”
