Malian tunes

As a teenager,Fatoumata Diawara left her home in Mali and moved to France to become an actor. She appeared in a few films and theatre productions, but it was much later when she found her true calling in music. “I wanted to be able to travel with my music,to be able to take Malian music to many different parts of the world,” says Diawara, who will perform in the city at the Blue Frog amphitheatre on Friday. The concert will also feature The Erik Truffaz Quartet with internationally-acclaimed jazz trumpet player,Truffaz.

Diawara grew up in Mali listening to Wassoulou music,a genre of West African music performed mostly by women addressing women’s issues such as childbearing or fertility. So when she took up the guitar and began writing songs,Diawara fused the tradition with her own modern sensibility. In Fatou, her debut album, she sings about themes such as war, abandonment of children and female circumcision. Crossing the barriers of language, the album has won acclaim for its intense and hypnotic tracks.“Music is cathartic; it allows me to address the difficulties I have had in the past, but with a positive perspective for the future,” says Diawara, who had to fight off the cultural prejudice towards women in Africa as well as her parents’ opposition to her artistic ambitions, before she could move to Paris to find her destiny.

Gates open at 5 pm,and the

concert begins at 6 pm
