Two sewing machines and a small workshop was all that fashion designer Salim Asgarally started his career with in Mumbai. After studying fashion at the University of California,it was a conscious decision to come back to India and be part of the fashion scene that was booming in 1992,instead of staying back in the US where the fashion market was already saturated.
After 11 years, brand SA (Salim Asgarally) has grown from a single-line label to one that features three different labels for pret, couture and lifestyle. We look at fashion as something that envelopes ones entire life. Hence,we have separate labels for couture, pret and for styling the home. I offer my clients a 360-degree makeover, says Asgarally.
When a client approaches Asgarally,he first asks them what they want to change and why. Different clients come up with various reasons but the underlying motive is always that they want to leap into a fresh start. We style their hair according to the shape of their face and design a wardrobe based on their body type and daily requirements and profession, he says.
Asgarally recently launched a flagship store in Mumbai and will be in town to display his latest autumn-winter collection at Penthouze on Wednesday. The fashion show will feature models showcasing outfits designed by Asgarally as part of his collection titled Ehsaas (feeling in Urdu). Inspired by the different feelings experienced and expressed by women, the collection includes different lines for different moods. The all-white line features an interesting mix of tunics, kurtas, cocktail dresses and other outfits to represent the peace, tranquility and strength of a woman.
Another line of short cocktail dresses in a variety of pop colours such as fuchsia, green, blue and more bright colours represent the playful side of a woman where she needs to go out and have fun once in a while. The line of elegant floor-kissing gowns in velvety blue, rosy red and purple symbolise the romantic aspect of a womans life. Asgarally has worked on a range of fabrics such as georgette, linen, mulmul and a variety of silks.
Most of the outfits feature intelligent layering with Asgarally balancing different dimensions in his pieces to keep them wearable. Though his collection features kurtas, which have layering work,he has consciously refrained from designing anarkalis. I offered anarkalis during the era when films such as Umrao Jaan were influencing fashion trends in India. For the last few years, designers have done the anarkali to death. I dont want to make any more of it, says Asgarally.
