Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday said the state should be driven by information technology to help it fuel a high growth rate.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday said the state should be driven by information technology (IT) to help it fuel a high growth rate. Speaking at Tech Vista,Microsoft Research Indias annual research symposium,here Chavan said India was beset with many problems including energy crunch deficiency in per-capita availability of land and that the IT and sound knowledge-based economy can help it meet these challenges.

We are short of raw material and resources and we also have a food security problem. But despite that,youth today have a much better infrastructure for growth, he said.

Chavan said the government of India is sponsoring a programme to meet the talent deficit. We would Indian Institute of Scientific Education and Research (IISER) to become a global brand much faster, he said.

Chavan lamented that very few students pursued PHD in computer education,saying the government has many incentive programmes to help them in research. We are setting up 380 IT parks,of which 55 have already started, he added.

He assured the industry leaders that he would work to make the state hospitable for the IT industry. It will remain our effort to make the state more hospitable for IT industry, said Chavan.

He also lauded the role of Microsoft for innovations in the field of computer technology. At Tech Vista,people from the scientific and academic disciplines had come together and the event provided an opportunity for the research community,government and students to interact and exchange ideas on research and its future directions.
