Inmates throw chilli powder

The Deccan Gymkhana police arrested five inmates from the government-aided Mahila Sevagram Mandal for allegedly assaulting a female security guard and hurling chilli powder into her eyes for making an escape from the spot in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Those arrested have been identified as Salma Abdul Gani Khatri (26),Ashvini Shankar Shilimkar (19),Sonali Ankush Lavande (18),Priyanka Dashrath Khirid (18),Chandni Ankush Hamid Khan (18). Two more girls of age 16 and 17 years have been detained. The security guard Anis Abdul Sattar Inamdar (50) has lodged a police complaint. Police have booked them under Section 143,147,149 and 323 of the Indian Penal Code.

Police admit the destitute girls at the Mahila Sevagram Mandal. The organisation gets funds from the government for taking proper care of the destitute girls. Investigation officer,police sub inspector A P Khare told the media persons that the Mahila Sevagram Mandal follows a proper schedule with fix timings for meals and other activities.

“Sometimes the destitute girls who don’t like the fix schedule try to escape from the organisation. So security guards are deployed at the spot in day and night shifts,” Khare said.

Around 1.30 am on Wednesday,Inamdar was on night duty at the organisation,when the seven attacked her. They tried to tie up the guard’s hands. One of them hurled chilli powder into the guard’s eyes. Inamdar started shouting for help. Pratibha Shriyan,the superintendent of Mahila Sevagram Mandal,who resides near by,heard the noise of the girls. Shriyan shouted at the girls and then rushed to the spot. The girls by the time left Indamdar and fled.

Shriyan called the Deccan Gymkhana police at the organisation. Police arrested the girls and produced them before the Shivajinagar court on Thursday. The girls were remanded to magisterial custody. Police said that many girls have tried to escape from the Mahila Sevagram Mandal before. A girl had also committed suicide when she failed to escape,it was stated.
