For 26-year-old Roma Chawla,a fashion designer working in Mumbai,it was really funky to get a smiley on her tooth. “It was just doing something different that attracted me to get a tattoo on my tooth,” says Chawla. For-27-year old Paras Desai,a real estate professional who had to undergo root canal treatment,it was an impromptu decision to get a tooth tattoo and he opted for an Ichiban (number one in Japanese).
“It doesnt hurt and can be removed if I decide to later,” says Desai, who simply had to wait for the laboratory technician to paint, glaze and bake the design on the tooth and get it fitted by the dentist!
Pune-based Dr Pankaj Chivte and Mumbai based Dr Hetal Turakiya have been involved in making tooth-tattoos for the last few years and have received a good response in Mumbai and Goa. “We have now introduced the concept in Pune,” says Chivte, who recently launched a hi-tech clinic Beyond Smiles at Koregaon Park. From alphabets, stars, hearts and flowers, people want something special carved out on their tooth and while diamond studs are passe, tattoos are the new rage, feel the dentists. The technique however requires a special dental kit that is imported. “If a person has undergone a root canal and needs to fix a cap, then we offer to tattoo it,” says Turakiya. The kit has ceramic bio-compatible colours and the tattoos that are fabricated on the tooth are done in green, red, yellow and blue. It costs Rs 3000-4000 for designing a tattoo, says Chivte. Tooth tattoos are done on caps and not the real tooth, they explained.
Meanwhile Chivte’s dental clinic has launched a conscious sedation technology. “We have introduced a reflexology technique that helps patients overcome their fear of getting treated by a dentist. The foot reflexology guarantees that one can sit back and undergo the treatment without fear of pain.”
