The award ceremony of the India NGO Awards,instituted by the Resource Alliance and the Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation,was held in the city recently. The awards are aimed at promoting financial and organisational sustainability of civil society and strengthen the community support for their work.
Syeda Hamid,Member,Planning Commission was the chief guest at the event.
Pragati from Koraput was the national winner in the small category,while Action for Social Advancement (ASA) from Bhopal was honoured with the award in the medium category. BAIF Development Research Foundation from Pune and Sankara Eye Care Institutions from Coimbatore were jointly awarded in the large category.
The winners were presented trophy and cash prize of Rs four lakh.
Centre for Rural Development from Guwahati was given a special recognition award for the Rickshaw Bank Project Innovation.
The 2008 awards attracted the highest number of entries as compared to the last two years. Out of the 167 entries,52 organisations were shortlisted. The jury Roland Angerer of Plan International,Kajol Menon of Childline India Foundation,Vijay Mahajan of Basix India,Raj Chengappa from India Today and Rati Forbes from the Resource Alliance selected the final four national awardees.
