Symbiosis Law College won the Lokmanya Tilak moot court competition organised by the Deccan Education Society’s (DES) Law College. G H Raisoni College secured the second place. Snigdha Pande,Tanavi Machanty and Nitin Kumar represented Symbiosis. Raisoni’s team included Sonal Chillure,Rama Mahajani and Batul Ali. Justice P B Majmudar distributed prizes to the successful teams. While ILS Law College,Pune and Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya University,Lucknow won the best memorial prizes,Bhumika Kamara of Amity Law College and Vishvesh Kalara of G L College,Mumbai won the best advocate awards. Ajit Patwardhan,chairman,DES governing body,principal Rohini Honap,advocates Janak Dwarkadas and Rahul Chitnis were also present

British council education exhibition today
FOR those looking to study in the UK,the British Council has organised an ‘Education UK exhibition’ at the Le Meridien on Thursday. The exhibition will be held from 1 pm to 7 pm. Indian students represent the second largest number of international students in higher education in the UK. The exhibition will cater to a range of subjects at all levels: diploma,undergraduate and postgraduate. Information about scholarships and the student visa process will also be available. Additionally,there will be seminars on subjects such as business and management,IT and engineering,media studies,IELTS and student visas,stated a press release.

Recommendations invited for Tambe Award
Tilak Maharashtra University (TMU) has invited recommendations for the Kamal Tambe Award to be given for a Marathi book on Sanskrit literature. Books published in 2009 only will be considered for the award. According to a press note issued by the TMU,a committee set up by the TMU will select the best book for the award. Interested authors or people who want to refer some of the authors may send three copies of the book to Registrar,TMU,Vidyapeeth Bhavan,Gultekdi,Pune – 411037 by February 20. Award consists of Rs 1,200 cash.

SNDT organises book exhibition
The SNDT Women’s University Branch Library,Maharshi Karve Vidya Vihar,Karve Road has organised a book exhibition Granthotsav from February 9 to 11. The exhibition is meant for students to develop reading habits. This year social worker Sindhutai Sakpal will deliver a speech on February 10 at 12.15 pm. It is the 16 th exhibition and is be open to all.

DAAD award for city researcher
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has awarded the prestigious international fellowship for carrying out research on ‘Chloroplast Transformation in Sugarcane’ to Gauri Arvind Nerkar. She is presently working as a senior research fellow at the molecular biology and genetic engineering division of Vasantdada Sugar Institute. She will be carrying out her research at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology. The fellowship is awarded for a period of 1-2 years during which she will be granted a sum of 1000 Euros per month.

MSRTC workers protest on Shankar Sheth Road
Over 400 members of the State Transport Workers Union protested against the non- completion of promises by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation on February 5. The protest took place at MSRTC divisional office on Shankar Sheth Road. Various issues such as the inconveniences in hostels,partial allotment of long-distance duties to workers with lesser salaries,reduction in the leave-quota were raised during the protest.

Umeed Kothavala honoured in Dubai
UMEED Kothavala,a city-based entrepreneur and CEO at Extentia Information Technology,has received the Zoroastrian Outstanding Entrepreneurship award in Dubai recently,for his dedicated work as an entrepreneur in the fields of technological advancements ,education,social work and creating job opportunities . Kothavala is a software engineer from PICT,Pune,and has a master’s from Purdue University,USA.

BVU seminar on bio-diversity
Addressing the ‘India’s’ bio-diversity’ seminar at Bharati Vidyapeeth’s IMED College,Erandwana recently,Dr Erach Bharucha,director,BVIEER said that India has a rich traditional knowledge and wisdom in the conservation of nature and natural resources.
“Religious beliefs,culture and folklore have together treated nature and environment with sanctity. Conservation and protection of environment and love for nature have always been part of Indian culture,” Bharucha said. Dr Nitin Nayak,director of IMED,Mahesh Shitole, director,UG and Prof K V Mohite,NSS coordinator of Bharati Vidyapeeth were also present. The event was coordinated by Prof Netaji M Jadhav,Programme Officer of IMED,and Prof Pravin Mane.
