ONP Tulip,a hospital for women and children,is spearheading the initiative to launch a series of workshops,especially for women,on various health-related issues. The first such ‘Women’s Health Seminar’ is being organised on March 11 at ONP Tulip Hospital between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm. The topics to be discussed range from Cancers in Women,Infertility & IVF,Menstrual Disorders and Menopause and even Stress Management in Women. These topics will be addressed by experts in the respective fields,like Dr C Koppikar,Dr Sucheta Parte,Dr Neena Sathe,Dr Anita Bapat and Dr Amita Phadnis.

Medical protest

The Jan Arogya Abhiyan (JAA) conducted a state level convention recently. It plans to launch a campaign to reverse the sharp hike in user fees at medical college hospitals,press forth the demand for basic overhaul in medicine procurement and distribution policy to ensure guaranteed availability of all essential medicines in health facilities and also for the immediate adoption of rules for BNHR Act to ensure protection of patient’s rights in private hospitals,said Dr Anant Phadke,coordinator of JAA.

Diabetes Clinic

The Chellaram Foundation has launched Chellaram Diabetes Institute,a state-of-the-art facility that aims to provide all medical services,support and information for diabetes under one roof. The institute encompasses a diabetes clinic,Opthalmology,Cardiology,Nephrology,Physiotherapy,Diabetic footcare,pharmacy and lifestyle consultancy. The available diagnostic services will include Pathology,Radiology,ultra-sound,ECG,and so on. It is also equipped for minor surgery and daycare.

Glaucoma Week

Glaucoma Week will be observed from March 6-12 and world over programmes are being held to create awareness on glaucoma,the leading cause of blindness in most parts of the world. As glaucoma is a disease with few symptoms in the initial stages and more awareness is required to ensure early treatment,says city-based ophthalmologist Dr Parikshit Gogate,who has been invited to teach at the Emory Pediatric Cataract Symposium in New York this week. The symposium has been organised by the Emory School of Medicine and shall be held at the Yale Club,New York. The symposium aims to reach out to pediatric ophthalmologists in the United States to improve outcome of pediatric cataract surgery. Dr Gogate is the only invited speaker from India.

Humanitarian Award

Dr Rahul Patil of Noble hospital was awarded the ‘Manavta Puraskar’ by the All India Anti-Corruption committee for saving the life of a 26-year old boy from Kolkata. Sanjay Kumar experienced pain in his chest and fell down on a road. He had suffered a severe heart attack and needed immediate treatment. Surgery was successful and Kumar was discharged within four days. The surgery was conducted free of cost,said Chandan Suratwala,national vice president of the committee. Dr Avinash Inamdar gave away the award.

Brain Tumour Foundation

The Brain Tumour Foundation,a foundation for neuro-surgical charity,excellence and research,was launched recently in Pune. This Foundation will work as a part of Synapse Brain and Spine Foundation ,according to neurosurgeon Dr Jaydev Panchawagh. Surgery of brain tumours is not only restricted to the removal of the tumours,it is more important to protect the brain while removing the tumour.

Health camps

Hope For the Children Foundation will be conducting medical camps in select orphanages at Vishrantwadi,Wadgaonsheri and Wagholi from March 8 to 25. The camps,being conducted in collaboration with the paediatrics department of the Bharati Vidyapeeth University Medical College,will provide general health check-up and Vitamin A supplements to underprivileged children.
