Heart matters
Heart By Hiremath the play staged by the doctor duo of Shirish and Jagdish Hiremath, which was staged for the first time on Saturday at the Balgandharva Rangmandir saw a packed house .

Speaking about the play,Dr Jagdish Hiremath, who plays the role of a guardian angel, says,“The play is a comic take on the sheer ignorance that people display when it comes to taking care of their heart. It depicts the comic capers of a man who has through his prayers received a free heart from god that he is trying to sell to people to make money. Incidentally he runs into weird characters who wish to buy the heart as they themselves are either knowingly or unknowingly suffering from some heart ailments.”

“Interspersed in between the comic capers are dialogues by the two guardian angels,me and Satish who explain the various heart problems and the ways and means of preventing and curing them. The duration of the actual dialogues of the play is one hour and that of the various teachings that are given out by us is another 1 hour. Eventually in due course of the play the main protagonist learns about the important gift that he has received and vouches to keep the heart for himself and also take care of his health and his heart,” says Hiremath.

New generation surgery
One of the first new-generation total knee replacement surgery was performed at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital,on a 48-year-old patient Laxmi (name changed) of Jalgaon. This advanced form of fourth generation knee replacement implant Called Optetrak Knee,is very rare and has been designed by Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York,USA. The fourth generation knee replacement addresses critical issues of wear and anterior knee pain.

The advanced design of the implant reduces the stresses on the polyethylene (the plastic part of a knee prosthesis is made of a material called polyethylene) by modulating the curvature in such a way that torsional stiffness is maintained in load bearing but contact stresses are lower.

Dr. Kiran Kharat, director and senior consultant in joint replacement at ABMH,explains- “I used this particular implant for my patient because she was only 48 years old. Her bone structure was very small and she had very large cysts in the bone. This meant that the implant should be bone conserving, which this knee indeed is.”
