GE bets big on India,to set up manufacturing plant at Chakan

As part of its expansion plans,GE on Friday announced it would build a first-of-its-kind manufacturing facility in Chakan,spread over 68 acres at an investment of Rs 1,000 crore.

As part of its expansion plans,GE on Friday announced it would build a first-of-its-kind manufacturing facility in Chakan,spread over 68 acres at an investment of Rs 1,000 crore. The manufacturing facility would help the company develop localised products and solutions for the energy sector in its first phase of operations that would commence in 2013. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed in this regard between the state government and GE here on Friday.

The facility will focus on development of energy products and technologies driven by the industry needs for power generation,transmission and distribution as well as measurement and control. In addition,GE will package its environment-friendly technologies such as hybrid batteries for energy storage and biogas power generation technologies at the plant. The site will enable assembly and production support for any GE business that needs local manufacturing capability in India. The facility will employ nearly 2,000 engineering staff.

John Flannery,President and CEO,GE India added,Our new manufacturing facility aligns well with the governments objective of strengthening manufacturing and infrastructure in the country.

GE already has a wind turbine assembly unit in Pune. The recently acquired Dresser business by GE builds and tests industrial process valves for both the Indian market and exports. Industrial solutions plant at Bangalore manufactures industry-leading engineered equipment including low and medium voltage switchgear,control and relay panels,marine and industrial breakers, Flannery added.

Meanwhile,Chief Minister,Prithviraj Chavan said the government in its industrial policy will give the the exit option to those who have acquired land for SEZs to convert the area into industrial parks.

He also said that those people who were of the view that the state has failed to rope in investment were wrong. He pointed out that investment spots such as Hinjewadi have come up in the city,adding that there is a need to improve social infrastructure.

The chief minister said the state intends to spread the fruits of development to rural parts as well. We want development to be spread to the other parts of the state.
